Perspective mapping is a new hybrid mixed methods technique for online interviewing. During video conferencing, mind mapping software is used to explore a phenomenon of interest, identify key concepts related to the phenomenon, and concisely depict experiences described by the participant. Key concepts are ranked inside of a quantitative framework (e.g., visual Likert scale), which enables measurement of the qualitative experiences.
While suitable for may contexts, the method has most often been used for situations were “actionable” qualitative data is needed to support regulatory decision making. These are situations where patient voice is needed in a systematically reportable way to inform the development of new digital health technology, drug trials, and patient reported outcomes assessment measures (e.g., endpoints for trails).
